How Zine Templates Work

You can customize the exact look of your zine using the Templates built into WebCrimson.

Your CrimsonZine will have two separate Templates:

  • One Template to customize the design of your Articles
  • Another Template to customize the design of your Article Index
    • This Template will also let you create Archival lists of your older Articles

Customizing the Design of your Articles

First, let's customize the look of your Articles.

In order to do that, let's take a quick look at how this template works.

Every time you publish an article, WebCrimson will take the article and push it through the Article Template, creating a separate web page for every article.

Because every single entry ends up creating a web page, we call this a "Single Entry Template":

You can take any HTML designs, and place the Title, Subtitle, Author Name, and Entry of the article into the design using a single tag-based system we call CrimsonTags (we'll cover that in more detail later).

Customizing the Design of your Article Index

Now that each article has its own separate page, you can create an Article Index to point to them all.  In fact, we already did that for you automatically when you used the CrimsonZine Start Wizard.

Now whenever you publish an article, WebCrimson will generate at least two files:

  • An updated version of that Article
  • An updated version of the Article Index that points to that page

Because this new page is really just an Index pointing to the pages you've already created, we call this an "Index Template":

As we mentioned earlier, the Index Template can generate more than just a single Index page.

It can also generate two other sets of pages:

  • Archive Indexes - for example, an Index page that points to all the articles published in the year 2000
  • Archive Links - a page pointing to all the old Archive Indexes

Once again, we've configured all of these templates for you automatically, back when you used the CrimsonZine Start Wizard.

You can customize your Template with any HTML design you like, pointing to the Articles using the same tag-based Templating system, CrimsonTags.
