Using Start Page: Configuring your Publishing Settings

You can use the pulldown at the top of this page to choose where you'd like to publish your site.

WebCrimson gives you the option to publish your site to one of two locations:

  1. Publish to your own independent webhost using FTP
  2. Publish to our free crimsonhosting

1. Publish to your own independent webhost using FTP

If you are using a webhost other than our free hosting, then you'll have to input the FTP information so that WebCrimson can send the files to your server.

There are three required fields:

  • FTP Server Name
  • Your FTP Username
  • Your FTP Password

In addition, there are four optional fields:

  • FTP default port
  • FTP root path
  • FTP mode
  • Base URL

You can see detail on each of these fields below:

FTP Server (required)

The server you use to edit your web site (e.g. ftp.mysite.com). When you publish new content through WebCrimson, we will automatically send new or updated pages to this server.

Note: If you do not have an FTP server for your web site or you do not know your server information, you can still use WebCrimson to start building your templates and creating your content database. But you will need to provide your FTP information before WebCrimson can publish new content to your web site.

FTP Username (required)

The username you use to log in to the FTP server listed above. WebCrimson stores this information in a secure location.

FTP Password (required)

The password you use to log in to the FTP server listed above. WebCrimson stores this information in a secure location.

FTP Default Port (optional)

The port your FTP server is on. The default for most FTP servers is "21". Please ask your FTP administrator if you are unsure of this value.

FTP Root Path (optional)

The directory on your FTP server where you would like WebCrimson to start adding new files (e.g. "/newcontent"). All new files and subdirectories that you create through WebCrimson will appear within (beneath) this root directory. If you leave this field blank, WebCrimson will add files staight to the default root directory on your server.

Note: WebCrimson cannot create a new root path on your FTP server. Any root path you specify in the field above must already exist on your FTP server. If it does not yet exist, you will need to create it through your standard FTP program before WebCrimson can publish new content to your web site.

FTP Mode

You have two options here: Active or Passive mode.

This feature is used to exchange information with FTP servers that are behind firewalls. If you are unsure about this feature, we recommend you select "Passive".

Base URL

The Base URL serves two main functions:

  1. Whenever you finish publishing, WebCrimson will show you your Base URL so that you can see if the changes have gone through to your satisfaction.
  2. Whenever you have relative images or relative links on your site, WebCrimson will add the Base URL so that you can see your relative images as you edit, or so that your links resolve when you preview publication.

2. Publish to our free crimsonhosting

We offer free hosting at the following URL's:

  • yourname.crimsonblog.com
  • yourname.crimsonzine.com

If you select this option, you'll have two decisions to make before we can configure your hosting for you:

1. Choose which free crimsonhosting site you'd like to host your site on:

First, you can choose where you'd like to host your site: crimsonblog.com, or crimsonzine.com.  You can do this using the built-in pulldown on this page.

2. Choose your unique subdomain

Once you've done that, now you can type in your preferred subdomain:

  • SUBDOMAIN.CrimsonBlog.com
  • SUBDOMAIN.CrimsonZine.com

Make sure that your selected subdomain is unique!  If someone else is using that subdomain, then you will have to choose another one.

Once you've chosen and saved your complete URL, no one can take it from you.  Every time you publish an entry or a template, WebCrimson will generate your pages and send them to your unique URL.

Note: if you switch between "free crimsonhosting" and "FTP", your free crimsonhosting subdomain will still be reserved.  However, if you choose a new subdomain and hit save, your previous URL will become available to others (i.e. you may not be able to get it back again).
